158 Democrats Oppose Legislation Targeting Violent Criminal Immigrants

The Violence Against Women by Illegal Aliens Act passed the House of Representatives with bipartisan support, but 158 Democrats voted against it, prompting outrage from Republican lawmakers. The bill, introduced by Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC), passed 266-158, with 51 Democrats crossing party lines to vote in favor.

The measure targets illegal immigrants convicted of sexual offenses, conspiracy to commit such crimes, or domestic violence. Supporters of the legislation called it a necessary step to protect vulnerable populations, while opponents argued it unfairly targets immigrants.

Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) characterized the bill as divisive and accused Republicans of exploiting crime for political gain. Her remarks fueled Republican criticism, with many arguing that the opposition prioritizes political correctness over public safety.

Mace’s sponsorship of the bill comes despite her contentious history with the Republican base. Who has distanced herself from Trump, she reportedly sought to create a spectacle by confronting rioters for attention, raising skepticism about her motivations. Despite having participated in the persecution of conservatives over that day, Mace has since sought alignment with Trump.

Democrats supporting the bill included Reps. Hillary Scholten (D-MI) and Abigail Spanberger (D-VA), signaling a growing recognition of the dangers posed by border-related crimes.

This vote highlights ongoing tensions over immigration policy and public safety concerns under the Biden administration.
