Abigail Disney, an influential Democratic donor and Disney heiress, has decided to halt her contributions to the Democratic Party until President Joe Biden withdraws from the presidential race. Disney’s decision follows Biden’s disappointing debate performance and was shared during an interview with CNBC News on Thursday.
Disney emphasized her decision is based on a realistic assessment of the political landscape rather than any personal disrespect towards Biden. “I intend to stop any contributions to the party unless and until they replace Biden at the top of the ticket,” Disney explained. “Biden is a good man and has served his country admirably, but the stakes are far too high. If Biden does not step down, the Democrats will lose. Of that, I am absolutely certain. The consequences for the loss will be genuinely dire.”
Financial records indicate Disney’s substantial support for Democratic causes. She donated $50,000 to the Jane Fonda Climate Political Action Committee in April, which has since directed $35,000 to Democratic congressional candidates. Furthermore, Disney gave $150,000 to Planned Parenthood Votes, which has distributed over $400,000 to Democrats this election cycle, including $26,000 to Biden.
Disney promotes Vice President Kamala Harris as a viable alternative to Biden, suggesting that Harris has the potential to secure a victory against Donald Trump. “We have an excellent Vice President,” Disney remarked. “If Democrats would tolerate any of her perceived shortcomings even one-tenth as much as they have tolerated Biden’s, we can win this election by a lot.”
Her comments come as the Democratic Party faces increasing anxiety over Biden’s debate performance. Many within the party are urging Biden to step aside due to concerns about his cognitive abilities and overall fitness to lead the country.
