During a press conference on Saturday, New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D) defended President Donald Trump against allegations that he is a “fascist.” Adams urged Americans to reduce inflammatory language, advocating for a more measured tone in political discussions.
Adams was questioned about his views on whether Trump fits the description of a fascist. He responded, “I know what Hitler has done, and I know what a fascist regime looks like. Comparing Trump to Hitler is not appropriate.” Adams shared that he has also been called similar names, which he found both hurtful and inaccurate.
With Trump’s rally at Madison Square Garden approaching, Adams emphasized the importance of protecting free speech in New York. “This is America, and everyone has the right to get their message out. Our job is to ensure their safety,” he stated.
Adams’ remarks come as Vice President Kamala Harris and other Democrats, like California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D), have labeled Trump as a threat to democracy. Harris cited an Atlantic article that accused Trump of making offensive comments and expressing admiration for Hitler’s generals.
The Atlantic report further alleged that Trump became angry over the costs of Vanessa Guillen’s funeral, with anonymous witnesses claiming he used derogatory remarks about the expenses. Newsom has defended the use of the term “fascist” to describe Trump, suggesting it accurately reflects his behavior.
Adams, however, took a different approach, urging leaders to be cautious with their words. He warned that the heated political climate will only intensify if leaders continue to escalate their rhetoric, making it harder to govern effectively after the election.
