Republicans are demanding President Joe Biden resign from office following his announcement that he will not seek reelection in 2024. Biden revealed his decision in a post on X, endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris for the Democratic nomination. This has led to intensified calls from GOP leaders for Biden to step down immediately.
“If Joe Biden is not fit to run for President, he is not fit to serve as President,” Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson of Louisiana posted on X. “He must resign the office immediately. November 5 cannot arrive soon enough.”
Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH), who is also the party’s nominee for vice president, questioned Biden’s ability to remain in office if he is not running for reelection. “Not running for reelection would be a clear admission that President Trump was right all along about Biden not being mentally fit enough to serve as Commander-in-Chief,” Vance said in a post.
Senate Republicans joined the call for Biden’s resignation. Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO), “Then RESIGN your office. If you can’t run a mere political campaign, you can’t be President.” Sen. Tommy Tuberville of Alabama stated, “Joe Biden was never mentally fit to be President. I join my colleagues in demanding that President Biden resign immediately.”
House Republicans also voiced their demands for Biden’s resignation. Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina suggested invoking the 25th Amendment if Biden does not step down. Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) stated, “If Biden can’t run for office, he should resign. Immediately.”
The calls for Biden to resign highlight ongoing concerns among Republicans about his cognitive abilities and their belief that a change in leadership is necessary for effective governance.
