CNN analyst Marc Lotter, who previously served as communications director for Trump’s 2020 campaign, recently assessed the early voting figures for Democrats in critical battleground states. Lotter’s analysis reveals deficits that could jeopardize Democratic hopes of winning these states.
“The math doesn’t work,” Lotter remarked, indicating that early vote numbers show Democrats down by 1.7 million votes in urban battleground areas. Urban areas are typically Democratic strongholds, so this shortfall raises concerns about whether Democrats are generating the necessary momentum to win these crucial states.

In addition to the deficit in urban votes, Lotter pointed out that Democrats are struggling among women voters. He noted that Democrats are “down 1.4 million votes in the battleground states among women voters.” This drop-off among women—a group that traditionally leans Democratic—could further challenge the party’s chances in key states.
Meanwhile, rural turnout is trending in favor of Republicans. Lotter highlighted that rural voters, who are more likely to vote Republican, have “overperformed early by 300,000.” With rural areas contributing strongly to the GOP base, this early turnout could boost Republicans as they head into Election Day.
Lotter explained that Democrats generally need to win their races through early voting, while Republicans tend to perform better on Election Day. He stated, “Democrats have to win their races early; Republicans generally win them on Election Day,” underscoring the importance of early voting for Democrats.

With Democrats falling behind, a strong Republican turnout today could further solidify their position in battleground states, potentially paving the way for a Trump victory and a rollback of Biden-era policies. High voter turnout on Election Day could prove decisive for Republicans.
