Man Charged With Attempted Attack On Trump Officials At Capitol

A Massachusetts man carrying weapons and explosives was arrested at the U.S. Capitol after admitting to law enforcement that he planned to kill Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, authorities said. The suspect, Ryan Michael English, 31, was taken into custody after voluntarily approaching a Capitol Police officer and revealing his plot.

Police say English was carrying two Molotov cocktails, a knife, and a lighter when he turned himself in Monday afternoon. Officers later searched his vehicle, parked near Independence Avenue, and found additional materials linked to the incendiary devices.

According to investigators, English originally planned to target Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and House Speaker Mike Johnson. However, after reading online posts about Bessent’s confirmation, he shifted his focus and made his way to Washington, D.C., avoiding digital tracking by leaving his phone behind and purchasing a road atlas with cash.

Court documents state that English admitted he planned to ignite fires as a distraction and would have attempted to stab Bessent. He also allegedly acknowledged he was prepared to confront police officers if necessary, indicating he was ready for a deadly encounter.

A handwritten message found in English’s possession revealed an apology to a loved one, blaming political figures for what he saw as an attack on his beliefs. Officials say he described his targets as dangerous and claimed he needed to take action.

English faces serious federal charges, including possession of an unregistered firearm, carrying an explosive device onto government grounds, and making violent threats against public officials. Authorities are continuing their investigation into his background and possible connections.
