Following President-elect Donald Trump’s decisive 2024 victory, therapists in New York City report a significant increase in appointment requests from liberals struggling to cope with the election results. The surge mirrors the aftermath of Trump’s 2016 victory, with clients expressing fear and anger over the political shift.
“It’s like 2016 all over again,” said Manhattan psychologist Chloe Carmichael, who has seen a 15% spike in inquiries. “People are scared and traumatized by what this means for their future.”
Therapists say the reaction has been particularly intense among women. Alyson Cohen, a New York-based psychotherapist, described receiving messages from female clients second-guessing plans to have children due to concerns about reproductive rights under Trump’s administration.
Relationship tensions are also on the rise. Psychotherapist Lisa Brateman noted that couples who voted for opposing candidates are finding it difficult to navigate their emotions. “When one partner voted Democrat and the other voted for Trump, it can feel like a personal betrayal,” she said.
The quick resolution of the election has provided some solace to those fearing prolonged uncertainty. “The clarity of Trump’s win has helped ease some anxiety,” Carmichael said. “It’s better than weeks of wondering who the winner would be.”
As liberals process the shock of Trump’s return to power, New York City’s mental health professionals are bracing for an extended period of heightened demand for therapy.
