Russian Nuclear And Chemical Defense Commander Killed In Ukrainian Bombing

Lt. Gen. Igor Kirillov, who led Russia’s nuclear, biological and chemical defense forces, was killed in a targeted bombing in Moscow on Tuesday. Ukrainian officials have claimed responsibility, calling Kirillov a “legitimate target” for his involvement in the use of banned chemical weapons.

The attack occurred when an explosive device concealed in a scooter detonated near a residential building. Russia’s Investigative Committee said the explosion killed Kirillov and one aide, severely damaging the building and shattering windows across the street.

Ukrainian security services have accused Russia of repeatedly using banned chemical agents on the battlefield, with officials claiming over 4,800 recorded uses of such weapons. Agents like CS gas and chloropicrin have been cited as examples, both of which are prohibited under international conventions.

Kirillov had been sanctioned by the US and the UK for his role in overseeing these chemical weapons. The State Department highlighted his unit’s use of choking agents, while the UK sanctioned him for similar reasons earlier this year.

Former Russian President Dmitri Medvedev condemned the bombing, warning that Ukraine would face retaliation. “Ukraine is dragging out the war and resorting to assassination,” Medvedev said, signaling a likely escalation in Russian responses.

Russia has reported that a 29-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the killing of Kirillov.

The successful operation represents one of Ukraine’s most significant strikes against Russia’s military leadership outside of combat zones, underscoring Kyiv’s growing ability to execute precision attacks within Russian territory.
