A grassroots Facebook campaign launched after Hurricane Helene brings renewed optimism to North Carolina mountain residents as winter approaches.
Dana Flaherty created “Western NC Holiday Hope” after witnessing destruction while volunteering with rescue crews. The initiative pairs storm-affected households with donors who fulfill wish lists through Amazon purchases.
Crystal Barrett voiced astonishment at the outpouring of generosity toward her Leicester community. Her family spent over two weeks without basic utilities after the hurricane struck, damaging their property and threatening their holiday plans.
“Growing up, neighbors helped each other without hesitation,” Barrett said. “That spirit disappeared over time, but this program shows kindness still exists.”
The online group expanded from 200 to more than 3,500 members within weeks. Flaherty implements strict verification protocols, requiring families to document hurricane impacts before receiving assistance.
Mary Christ, who retired from teaching in Concord, discovered purpose through the program. “While I cannot assist with physical cleanup, this lets me support fellow North Carolinians,” Christ said.
The campaign sparked wider community involvement beyond gift-giving. Participants share recovery updates, offer emotional support and coordinate additional aid efforts through the platform.
“These communities deserve ongoing attention,” said Flaherty, who plans establishing a nonprofit to maintain momentum after holiday initiatives conclude.
For many recipients, the program revives faith in humanity during difficult times. “The donors became family,” Barrett said. “Their generosity reminds us we’re not forgotten.”
