Southern District Prepares For Change As Damian Williams Resigns

Damian Williams, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, has announced his resignation effective December 13, opening the door for President-elect Donald Trump to appoint Jay Clayton as his successor. This change could bring a new direction to the high-profile cases handled by the office.

Williams, nominated by President Joe Biden in 2021, prosecuted significant cases involving figures such as Mayor Eric Adams and Ghislaine Maxwell. His resignation leaves questions about how ongoing trials, including Adams’ corruption case, will be managed.
Reflecting on his time in office, Williams praised the professionalism and dedication of his staff. “This office will continue to excel thanks to the exceptional people who serve here,” he said.

Jay Clayton, Trump’s pick for the role, previously served as chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission. While his lack of prosecutorial experience has drawn criticism, others believe his business acumen could be an asset.

As one of the country’s most influential legal offices, the Southern District is known for tackling politically sensitive cases. Clayton’s confirmation is expected to shape its approach to these investigations.

In the interim, Edward Y. Kim, the current Deputy U.S. Attorney, will serve in an acting capacity. The public and legal observers will closely monitor how this transition affects the district’s operations.
