Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) is facing growing scrutiny after Border Czar Tom Homan contacted the Department of Justice to ask whether her involvement in a “Know Your Rights” webinar violated federal law. The event provided guidance to illegal immigrants on how to avoid ICE encounters, raising concerns that it may have impeded law enforcement operations.

Tom Homan has referred AOC to the DOJ for potential prosecution.

Homan stated in an interview that he contacted the Deputy U.S. Attorney General to clarify whether Ocasio-Cortez’s event could be considered obstruction. He noted that interfering with ICE enforcement is a serious offense and that a legal review was necessary.

The webinar, streamed on Ocasio-Cortez’s Facebook page, instructed illegal immigrants on their rights when approached by ICE agents. The event focused on how to refuse searches, avoid answering questions, and respond to immigration enforcement actions.
Good. They are so quick to put people
In jail on trumped up charges. But this is not ok what they are doing. I’d be in jail if I interfered with an investigation. They should be held to the same standard— Joseph Lanier (@JosephLani13279) February 14, 2025
Ocasio-Cortez responded to Homan’s concerns by claiming that ICE agents have entered homes illegally without warrants. She defended her webinar as a public service, stating that all individuals, regardless of status, have legal rights that must be upheld.
Legal analysts say that providing general legal information is not a crime, but if an individual actively helps others evade law enforcement, it could be considered obstruction. The DOJ has not yet announced whether it will investigate Ocasio-Cortez’s involvement in the webinar.
The Trump administration has repeatedly stated that it will pursue legal action against anyone who interferes with immigration enforcement. Whether Ocasio-Cortez’s event meets that threshold remains a question for the DOJ to determine.
