Tragedy Strikes As Decorated Officer Shot While Breaking Into Home

Aubree Horton, an off-duty officer with the Atlanta Police Department, was shot and killed in Winston, Georgia, on Friday morning while allegedly attempting to break into a neighbor’s residence. Horton, who was named “Investigator of the Year” just weeks prior, had been serving with the department for nine years.

The incident occurred around 5 a.m. when the Douglas County Sheriff’s Deputies were called to the scene. Officials report that Horton entered the home through the front door and confronted the homeowner, who responded with lethal force. Capt. John Mauney remarked that the homeowner acted in self-defense when he shot Horton.

Local authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding Horton’s actions, with early indications suggesting he may have been experiencing a mental health episode or under the influence of narcotics. Neighbors expressed shock at the violence, with one resident stating, “This isn’t what you see out here,” highlighting the community’s disbelief.

Horton lived just a short distance from where he was killed, raising concerns about safety in the area. His recent recognition as “Investigator of the Year” highlighted his dedication to law enforcement, particularly in connection with the case of Leondre Flynt, a missing person whose remains were found this past July.

The award ceremony featured Horton speaking about the importance of bringing closure to victims’ families, underscoring his commitment to justice.
