In a recent social media statement, former President Donald Trump pledged to negotiate the release of Evan Gershkovich, a Wall Street Journal reporter imprisoned in Russia on espionage charges, asserting he could do so without any compensation. Trump’s commitment came after Gershkovich was sentenced to 16 years in a notorious Russian penal colony, a verdict widely denounced as unjust by global observers and Gershkovich’s colleagues.
Trump took to Truth Social to express his intentions, stating, “Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich was just sentenced to 16 years in prison by a Russian Court. Biden will NEVER GET HIM OUT, unless he pays a ‘king’s ransom.’” He continued, “I will get him out FOR NO COMPENSATION immediately following our victory on November 5th, and it will be my great honor to do so.”
The former president criticized the current administration for their inability to secure Gershkovich’s release and used this stance to bolster his campaign, urging, “Vote for TRUMP, and The Wall Street Journal should STOP BEING STUPID!!!”
Gershkovich has been held for about 16 months in Lefortovo Prison, a facility known for its harsh conditions and high-profile detainees. The international community, including numerous world leaders, has rallied around the journalist, denouncing the charges as fabricated and politically motivated due to tensions between Russia and the U.S. over Ukraine.
In response to the sentencing, President Biden emphasized his administration’s dedication to press freedom, stating, “As I have long said and as the UN also concluded, there is no question that Russia is wrongfully detaining Evan. Journalism is not a crime.
We will continue to stand strong for press freedom in Russia and worldwide, and stand against all those who seek to attack the press or target journalists.”
Trump’s promise to secure Gershkovich’s release without compensation highlights his confidence in his diplomatic skills and positions this issue as a focal point in his campaign, contrasting his approach with that of the Biden administration.
