Trump Pressures Russia For Ceasefire As Fighting Escalates

Diplomatic discussions between the U.S. and Russia have raised hopes for an end to the war in Ukraine, but Russian forces continue their advances, tightening their grip on key areas. President Donald Trump has urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to stop the assault and agree to a ceasefire, warning that thousands of Ukrainian troops remain trapped.

Posting on Truth Social, Trump expressed concern over the worsening conditions on the battlefield. “At this very moment, thousands of Ukrainian troops are completely surrounded by the Russian military, and in a very bad and vulnerable position,” he wrote. “I have strongly requested to President Putin that their lives be spared. This would be a horrible massacre, one not seen since World War II. God bless them all!!!”

Moscow has signaled a willingness to negotiate, but Putin has yet to commit to a ceasefire. Instead, he has outlined a series of demands that complicate efforts to reach an agreement. Russian officials have indicated that Trump has received a private message from Putin through U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff, though its contents remain unknown.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has criticized Russia’s approach, calling Putin’s tactics an effort to prolong the war rather than end it. He accused Moscow of setting unnecessary conditions to make peace negotiations more difficult while continuing its military campaign.

Western intelligence officials have cautioned that Russia may use negotiations as a tool to delay while advancing militarily. Reports suggest that even if a ceasefire is reached, Putin may not abide by it and could continue to destabilize Ukraine through other means. A European intelligence source claimed that Putin sees Trump as someone he can influence, raising concerns about Moscow’s intentions.

The G7 responded by reaffirming support for Ukraine, warning that Russia would face additional sanctions if it does not engage in meaningful peace efforts. The group also stressed that any ceasefire agreement must come with strong security assurances to prevent further Russian aggression.

On the ground, Russian forces have captured more territory in southeastern Ukraine, raising fears that Putin is consolidating his military gains to strengthen his position in negotiations.
