Trump Seeks Unified Reconciliation Bill To Expedite Legislative Goals

President-elect Donald Trump has urged House Republicans to pursue a single reconciliation package, prioritizing a streamlined approach to advancing his administration’s agenda. House Speaker Mike Johnson communicated Trump’s position during a private Capitol Hill meeting with GOP lawmakers.

Trump reportedly described the proposed measure as “one big beautiful bill,” reflecting his preference for a unified effort to address critical policy objectives. The plan seeks to avoid complications that could arise from dividing the legislation.

Some lawmakers, including Rep. Andy Harris (R-MD), have suggested an alternative approach. Harris proposed splitting the process into two bills, with the first targeting immediate funding for border security. He argued that this strategy could enable faster action to secure the southern border and deport illegal aliens.

“The president needs resources now,” Harris said, explaining that the two-step plan would allow for quick responses to pressing issues while deferring broader legislation to a later date.

Rep. Jason Smith (R-MO), chair of the House Ways and Means Committee, has backed Trump’s call for a single reconciliation package. Smith pointed to the GOP’s narrow majority in the House, arguing that consolidating efforts into one bill would increase the likelihood of success.

Smith also highlighted historical challenges in passing multiple reconciliation bills in the same year, emphasizing the practicality of Trump’s approach.
