Zelenskyy Fears US Pullback, Calls For European Army To Keep His War Going

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who has overseen the misuse of billions in Western aid, is now pushing for the creation of a European Army as he works to divide the U.S. and its European allies. Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, he claimed that Europe must stop relying on American protection, warning that Washington might abandon its commitments. By raising fears of U.S. disengagement, he is attempting to force European leaders into deeper military commitments.

Zelenskyy’s remarks are part of a calculated effort to ensure that his war effort does not collapse if the U.S. refuses to continue providing endless financial and military support. By casting doubt on American reliability, he hopes to pressure European leaders into stepping up their military involvement — essentially replacing U.S. aid with European resources.

This strategy comes as the Biden administration’s open-checkbook policy for Ukraine is no longer guaranteed. Vice President JD Vance met with Zelenskyy but did not offer any new commitments of military assistance. With the U.S. signaling that it will not fund Ukraine’s war indefinitely, Zelenskyy is now trying to manipulate European leaders into filling the gap.

His call for a European Army directly contradicts previous EU assurances that NATO would remain Europe’s primary security framework. Now, he is attempting to rewrite the narrative, pushing the idea that only a new European military force can protect the continent. In reality, this is just another attempt to keep the war going at all costs.

European leaders responded with mixed reactions. While Poland’s Donald Tusk echoed Zelenskyy’s concerns, others were more cautious. Many in Europe recognize that the Ukrainian government has been plagued by corruption and mismanagement of Western funds. The prospect of pouring even more resources into Zelenskyy’s war effort is not appealing to every EU leader.

As President Trump moves forward with plans for peace, Zelenskyy is doing everything in his power to prevent it. His push for a European Army is not about securing Europe — it is about ensuring that his war continues, even if it means dividing the West in the process.
