Gov. Tate Reeves signed legislation this week that officially ends the individual income tax in Mississippi, declaring it a major step toward long-term prosperity and economic freedom. Reeves called the move a defining moment for the state’s future, saying it reflects a deep belief in hard work, growth and personal responsibility.
“This is when we took our shot,” Reeves said, describing the law not just as a tax change, but as a decision to put faith in the people of Mississippi instead of relying on government control. The state now joins a small group of others that do not tax personal income.
We did it, Mississippi! We just eliminated the income tax!
Today is a day that will be remembered — not just for the headlines, not just for the politics, but for the profound, generational change it represents.

For Reeves, the signing marked the fulfillment of a goal he’s pursued for years — from his time as lieutenant governor through every legislative session as governor. He said he’s long believed that the state should stop taxing work and allow families to keep more of what they earn.
The policy shift aims to make Mississippi more competitive, particularly among southern states where population and investment have followed low-tax environments. Reeves said the law plants Mississippi’s flag as a destination for opportunity and growth.
He offered thanks to the lawmakers who helped make it possible, especially Speaker Jason White, who he said “worked his tail off to get this done.” He also credited Lt. Gov. Delbert Hosemann and House Ways and Means Chairman Trey Lamar for helping bring the law across the finish line.
Reeves emphasized that the benefits will reach beyond political circles. He said the law means more jobs, more take-home pay and a stronger foundation for future generations to build their lives.
By eliminating the income tax, the state sends a clear message to business owners, job seekers and families: Mississippi is ready to compete — and win.
