Maine Governor Under Investigation After Defying President Donald Trump On Women’s Sports

Gov. Janet Mills is under federal scrutiny after refusing to follow an executive order issued by President Donald Trump protecting fairness in women’s sports. The Trump administration wasted no time in responding, launching a Department of Education investigation into Maine’s policies.

The dispute erupted at a White House meeting with state leaders, where President Donald Trump directly asked Mills if she would comply with the new federal rule. Mills sidestepped the question, stating that Maine follows both state and federal law. President Donald Trump made it clear that failure to enforce the order would cost the state all federal education funding.

Mills, standing her ground, responded, “See you in court.” President Donald Trump fired back, saying he welcomed the challenge and predicting the case would be an easy win.

Shortly after their exchange, the Trump administration’s Office for Civil Rights announced an investigation into whether Maine’s policies violate Title IX protections. Greely High School was specifically named in the review for allegedly allowing a male student to compete against female athletes.

Craig Trainor, acting assistant secretary for civil rights, issued a firm warning, stating that all states must comply with federal law or risk losing federal funding. He emphasized that Title IX exists to protect female athletes, and the Trump administration would ensure taxpayer money does not fund policies that violate civil rights protections.

At CPAC, President Donald Trump reiterated his criticism of Mills, calling out her administration for refusing to comply with federal mandates and declaring that states ignoring the law would face severe consequences.
