Police reported that two children later died from their wounds, while one child was rushed to a hospital and survived with serious injuries. At a later briefing, Chief Jason Ziegler confirmed the deaths and the survival of one child, who was receiving continued care.

Reporters who reviewed a police affidavit said officers found 22-year-old mother Kailey Erhart inside the home holding a kitchen knife to her own throat. They reported she was covered in blood and told officers to kill her. The affidavit summary also states Erhart chased the children’s father and grandmother from the residence with a knife before police arrived. Officials arrested Erhart at the scene and transported her for booking after medical evaluation.

She also recalled holding a knife when officers arrived, according to that report.

Investigators also cited video found on the father’s phone that reportedly shows Erhart holding a child while brandishing a pistol and saying, “Say goodbye to your kids”. Separate coverage noted that the surviving one-year-old was expected to make a recovery, according to later updates from local reporting based on official statements.
