Trump Honors Soldier Who Wouldn’t Quit

A U.S. Army officer who charged Taliban fighters dragging away an unconscious soldier — killing them both to save his comrade — has now received America’s highest military honor from President Trump.

Story Highlights

  • President Trump awarded the Medal of Honor to Major Nicholas Dockery on June 18, 2026, at the White House.
  • Dockery’s platoon was ambushed by roughly 150 Taliban fighters in eastern Afghanistan on October 2, 2012.
  • He rescued wounded soldiers, administered CPR, used his body to shield a fellow soldier from a grenade, and was the last man to leave the battlefield.
  • Congress passed the Nicholas Dockery Medal of Honor Act unanimously to authorize the award, recognizing actions that had previously earned him a Silver Star.

One Soldier, 150 Taliban Fighters

On October 2, 2012, then-Lieutenant Nicholas Dockery led a mixed force of American and Afghan soldiers in Kapisa Province, Afghanistan. The unit was hit by a large Taliban force armed with machine guns, rocket-propelled grenades, and small arms. Dockery was a rifle platoon leader with the 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team of the 4th Infantry Division, serving in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

During the ambush, Dockery repeatedly crossed open ground under heavy fire to rally his soldiers and reinforce isolated positions. He used his body to shield a fellow soldier from a grenade blast and led counterattacks against the enemy. When Taliban fighters began dragging away an unconscious American soldier, Dockery charged them, killed both fighters, and kept his teammate alive. He then climbed to a rooftop, still under fire, and fired smoke grenades to guide friendly helicopter gunships onto enemy positions. He was the last soldier to leave the battlefield. [1]

Congress Acts, Trump Signs the Honor

Dockery’s actions on that day originally earned him a Silver Star — one of the military’s top valor awards. [2] He later earned a second Silver Star as a Special Forces commander, making him one of only two U.S. officers to receive two Silver Stars in the post-9/11 era. To elevate the October 2012 actions to the Medal of Honor level, Congress passed the Nicholas Dockery Medal of Honor Act. The House approved the bill unanimously. [3] President Trump then awarded the medal at a White House ceremony on June 18, 2026, alongside two other recipients.

The Medal of Honor is the nation’s highest military decoration. By law, it goes only to service members who show “conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty.” The review process is rigorous, typically taking more than 18 months and passing through multiple layers of military and civilian approval before reaching the president. A Career Built on Courage

Dockery graduated from the United States Military Academy in 2011 and commissioned as an Army infantry officer. [11] After his 2012 deployment, he went on to earn the Green Beret and commanded Special Forces teams in some of the military’s most demanding assignments. [8] His career reflects the kind of quiet, sustained service that rarely makes headlines but defines the backbone of the American military.

The National Medal of Honor Museum called Dockery’s courage and leadership “truly remarkable.” For the Americans who sent young men like Dockery into harm’s way after September 11, this ceremony is a long-overdue moment of recognition. It is a reminder that real heroism does not look like a political speech — it looks like a lieutenant charging two enemy fighters alone to drag his teammate to safety, then climbing a rooftop under fire to call in air support, and walking off the battlefield last.
